(Harvard) Mark III (U.S.Navy) (1949)

The Harvard Mark III was built at Harvard University for the U.S. Navy. It stood 30 feet by 15 feet and weighed 10 tons. It has 4,500 vacuum tubes, 3,000 relays, 2,500 magnetic recorder-phonographs, and 400,000 soldered connections. It contained 100 miles of wiring. The Mark III used a device called a "coding box" (see photo below) that translated problems into machine input for processing. |
