Joseph Marie Jacquard (1752-1834) developed an automatic pattern loom using punched holes in paper cards. He based his designs on earlier designs by the French inventor Jacques de Vaucanson, who (1741) developed a loom driven by a drum pierced with holes. The Jacquard loom cards concept was later used in early tabulating machines (see Hollerith) and later computers (see IBM Cards). |
